Starting a PhD

At the end of last year I officially became a PhD student at The University of Bath. In addition to my full time day job of being a Lecturer. I decided to do it a while ago, but it took a lot of form filling to actually get started. I will be researching the impact that Computer Science has on teaching, not just within the subject itself but also how it affects the teaching of other subjects. As computer scientists and developers we often create tools to make things more efficient. But we rarely stop to consider the impact that efficiency has on the overall process. In teaching we need to consider if we are streamlining the process in a way that removes the steps that are either critical or at least assist the learning process.

The plan is to break the work up into a series of distinct but related papers that will form a coherent whole rather than deliver the traditional thesis format. I’m hoping that will make the process a little more manageable as each paper will be a self contained piece of work.
